I’m Julia (or Jules for friends of the internet & IRL), and I live right by the ocean in LA. I’m an advocate for psychedelic medicine and root cause approaches to healing. After struggling with an eating disorder, depression, and PTSD for much of my life, I found my way to psychedelics which changed everything. I dedicated my life to getting these root cause modalities to more people, both in my day job in the non-profit world & through my creative pursuits online. Writing online has become my most cherished practice for integration. Fave topics: psychedelics, consciousness (both the mysteries and metaphysics of it), creativity, purposeful living, indigenous and natural wisdom, anything spirituality.

I'm Shuna Morelli, from Washington state, and I dove head first into the re-emergence of psychedelic medicines about a year ago. I worked with Peruvian ayahuascaros 24 years ago—before it was a "thing"— and that medicine has informed my life for a quarter century! Now, I geek out on all the research, have become a psychedelic guide, and even just published a delightful novel about The Psychedelic Discoveries of Jenni P. Perkins. That's the subtitle. The title is 49 Days, a nod to Rick Strassman and his seminal book The Spirit Molecule. Anyway, Jules, thank you for your writings. I actually read each one I receive, and am always delighted. :)

Wow, Shuna, you're a true OG! So great to have you here. Which medicines do you work with now? What did your process look like to become a guide? (Very interested on a personal level 😊). PS. I love the 49 days anecdote

Hi Jules! (I'm wondering what an OG is??) I work with psilocybin and MDMA. Stellar medicines for so many of us . . . My training was with Angela Ward in Seattle. She's pure magic. Her biz name is Guardian at the Gateway, which may give you an idea of her approach. She's also a nurse practitioner, doula etc. So has feet in both worlds.

I am Bill from Sacramento. Writing this on 1/24/25, post apocalypse. I am hoping you did not lose your home, Julia. I can't imagine facing the trauma you all have experienced. Please let us know how you are doing.

And then there is the disaster in DC. Being retired, I am finally thinking seriously about emigration. I guess I feel that a fragile soul like me has to choose his/her battles carefully, and maybe dealing with this US madness right now is not the one I want to choose.

I am really inexperienced in journeying, except for my college days in the late 60's - just a few mescaline trips with my girlfriend at the time. I have been trying to micro-dose mushrooms to deal with old traumas and chronic depression. So far, not seeing results I need. Tried a Stamets 4/3 protocol for 2 months at .5 grams, so now I am switching to an alternating days routine. There is a lot to learn, and as an aging Boomer living alone, I am moving slowly so far. I read somewhere that I may need to do a small 'macro' dose to kick start the micro-dosing. Not sure I have the support I might need to go very deep solo. Any thoughts or advice would be welcome.

Thinking I may have to wean off my lifelong cannabis use, in order to get any benefit. Using Bupropion for depression, which does not block the mushrooms, I am told. I'm willing to wean off that, if needed. Anyway, enough rambling for now.

Hi Bill, welcome!! Luckily our home has not been affected, thank you for asking. Yes, so far the 2025 plot reads quite apocalyptically.

I'm curious about your mescaline journeys! I've only experienced mescaline via the whole plant (San Pedro), never pure, which I hear is quite different. For some reason it has become a lot less common than it was back then? What was your experience with it?

I tend to agree about micro vs macrodose. If you can do macro, it's definitely my preferred path because it can be much more profound and direct in illuminating the roots. If you feel comfortable with altered states, you could have a trusted friend trip sit. Or if it's been too long or you'd simply like more support, finding a trusted guide is probably your best option. There are plenty in your area.

I don't know necessarily that you need to wean off cannabis to get benefits from the psychedelic journeys. In my experience, if there's unresolved trauma (+ its symptoms, such as depression), removing current coping strategies before resolving the roots isn't the most helpful because it will be de-stabilizing. The most effective approach in my experience is to work with medicines to heal the root causes, which will eliminate the need for daily numbing agents such as cannabis over the long run. Once roots have been tackled the old habits can be stopped much more safely and sustainably. But there's no short cuts and it takes time. And maybe you've already started on this work?

Oops. Tried to start a new paragraph, but the interface ended my comment. As far as my mental status - I have ADHD, and numerous emotional trauma events, mostly self-inflicted, starting at age 17. Lots of relationship mistakes, which I fully own. I read somewhere a quote: Are you really depressed, or is your life just depressing? For me, honestly, both. Mostly, I am lonely, alone, and my spirits are broken. I have wrestled with toxic authority too many times to fight any more. The election shattered me, and I am too old and beaten to muster another fight. Again, thanks for your reply.

Hi Julia, thanks for your reply. My experience with mescaline was always positive. It seemed to open my heart. On my first trip, Kathy and I took it with a mutual friend who supplied it. We went to Golden Gate Park on a glorious winter's day - 70 F or so. Sensations were more vivid and intense, but no hallucinations that I recall. No way of knowing the authenticity or purity, but it lasted most of the day, fading slowly. It's hard to remember very much. I would love to try San Pedro.

Hi Julia, I'm from Philly but I've been living in Ecuador for 5 years now. I have tried many therapies and vipassana and EFT to help peel back the layers in my personal growth, healing from c-ptsd, anxiety, depression. I recently found a therapist and had my first MDMA session that I'll be integrating for the next few months. My brain is rearranging and observing. It was a beautiful comfortable session for 6 hours in a hammock on my balcony at the beach. I'm also an experienced floater. I searched around and found out that a float spa is offering ketamine therapy in Austin, TX. Hoping that when MDMA is legal in the USA, it will be combined with floating and I am glad to be part of any studies in the future. wink wink ;) Thank you for The Journey and the community.

Hi Christina, so happy to have you! I'm glad to hear you've found your way to the medicines and hope your first journey met your expectations :) Is there anything with regard to your integration that you're particularly curious about?

PS. Floating has been on my bucket list for years, but I haven't tried it yet. I had no idea it's being combined with psychedelic treatments. That's incredible!

Hi I’m Leslie in Santa Barbara. I learned about you on the Beond podcast as part of my prep for my own upcoming ibogaine journey. The part where you differentiate the language of the ego versus the language of the heart resonated so deeply with me I have transcribed it, and will be bringing it along with me to Mexico :-) I have complex PTSD from childhood abuse and chronic neurological Lyme disease. I have a beautiful and loving husband, but this has been an extremely isolating and lonely and terrifying path to walk without a community of like-minded people on a heroes journey/healing path. So happy to connect here!

Hi Leslie, oh wow! You're going to Beond? I'm so excited for you - and a little bit jealous, I wish I could rewind time and experience it again, it's such a special place. I can't wait to hear how it will shape your journey. This medicine specifically gives me so much hope, and I love seeing it expand beyond the addiction realm, it's tremendously helpful with CPTSD. Have you worked with other medicines before?

Leslie Fineman's avatar

Hi Julia! I am actually not going to Beond though a piece of me wishes I was. I spoke at length with Tom and love what they are doing and the people they've brought on board. But I preferred to go to Cabo and for a shorter amount of time, so I found a clinic that ticked those boxes. I HOPE it will be a great set and setting for me. With only 4 nights at the clinic, I'll be forgoing the booster dose of Ibogaine. I'll have the option to do 5MeO but i recently did that in Santa Barbara and it was the most terrifying and horrifying experience of my adult life, so we'll see what my heart says about doing it again after Iboagine :-) Thankfully I have an amazing underground therapist in LA to help with prep and integration as I wont have all that amazing pre and post support you got from Beond.

I've worked with ketamine, MDMA and psylocibin and while all have given me beautiful and profound gifts, something deep has not been unearthed (something that I assume i got of preview of with 5MeO!) and this is what brings me to Ibogaine.

Super excited to be a part of this community!!

Can't wait to hear how the retreat goes! I did not do the booster either - I felt complete after my journey. The booster is mostly relevant for those who need the continued interruption of opioid withdrawals, so you'll be fine without it. 5meO seems to be a much more pleasant experience post-Ibogaine for most people. My first journey was equally terrifying but I went in again right after and broke through! So it's available - listen to your gut :) The most important thing is that you have someone great for integration.

PS. A book that is not at all psychedelics related but could be a great pre-read for the heart medicine is "A Return to Love", in case you haven't read that yet.

PPS. Thanks so much for the pledge - so greatly appreciated!

Hi Julia. I have just your Nov 1st post on Medium and decided to join you for a while. I have been on a journey inwards for the last few years having spent years and quite an enjoyable but rather unsatisfying life completely in my monkey mind. I know my intellectual side has become a distraction, and your comment about emotions being in the body and felt in the body, and the importance of living from the heart, really resonated with me. I have never tried psychedelics and don’t think I ever will, so am always interested in non- psychedelic ways of approaching this. I look forward to seeing where we go

Hi Jane, beautiful, so great to have you! Thank you for sharing. You are in the right place -- while my work is very much informed by the wisdom of psychedelic medicines it is by no means exclusively valuable to those who seek to encounter them. I hope you'll get something out of it 🙏

P.S. I'm also currently working on a 30-day challenge to quiet the mind and drop into the body/heart which will kick off in January

Hi Julia! Well, I guess I'm a little late to the party here – but I stumbled across your new(ish) Substack and, after reading a few of your intriguing pieces, thought I'd introduce myself as well.

Obviously I'm in good company! About me – I'm an emotions therapist and teach a "self-therapy" modality called Emotional Liberation (EL) that guides people to explore and work with their difficult emotions, which offers a path to processing, releasing and healing from trauma. It's a multidisciplinary approach that includes plant medicine; I lean toward psilocybin, with many finding that within the healing framework of EL, microdosing expands the portal to help a person come home to themself. It's all an experiment of course but, especially with macro-journeys, the set, setting and space holding is pivotal to a productive result. With thoughtful and professional preparation I believe that people do not have to face the prospect of "bad" trips. Thanks for your invitation to share about myself 😌

Hi Becca, welcome! You're not too late, this is an ongoing thread. But I am late in my reply, apologies, I am just re-emerging from several weeks offline... 😊

I am so intrigued by your modality. It sounds very much like what did in my own journey and what I've seen several plant medicine guides facilitate... is it a set modality or your creation? If the former, can you suggest any resources to learn more about it?

Hi, I'm Louis from Montreal. I discovered psychedelics when I was 17. I began abusing them because they provided the spiritual connection I was seeking my whole life. I soon had a terribly dangerous and painful bad trip I call the dark night of the soul (you can read about it on my Substack) and almost took my own life on 500ug of LSD. That changed my life and threw me into the deep end where I started studying and practicing Zen, yoga and other forms of mysticism. I built and psygaia.org in 2019 and run an online psychedelic education and self-healing community. I study the role of psychedelics in individual, cultural and ecological cohesion and health at the University of Ottawa and guide people on journeys in BC. I enjoy your Substack and just launched DOSED (dosed.substack.com) to write about psychedelics, culture and the world.

Peace and wholeness!

Thanks Julia! I would like to think I'm taking care of everything but there is always room for improvement. My main concern atm is that I tend to overwork and burnout, need to rest, and then repeat the cycle. It would be good to find a better balance in this process, maybe resources for spotting early signs of fatigue 🤷
