"If we put others on a pedestal, we do so because we cannot recognize the greatness within ourselves. Instead, we let others hold our potential so we never have to question our ability to fulfill it." - THIS IS BIG.
My introduction to the concept of shadow was through Debby Ford's helpful book: "The Dark Side of the Light Chasers". I found it incredibly helpful and even got my father to read it. I really like how you discuss projection (and give a real example) as a way to see what we are keeping in our 'shadow bag'. Another great topic and glad for the reminder of what it means to be human and where our work lies- thank you for this article, Julia.
That was my introduction, too! I forgot to mention it here I am now realizing. It is a powerful entry into this work 🙏 Thanks for the kind words, Brooks.
I usually scoff or criticize pieces I read on social media about the shadow; because they usually represent a superficial of incomplete understanding. This was a very good piece! I love the way you described your projection with Michael. Thanks!
I haven't heard of shadow work before but you have inspired me to look into it more and I'm looking forward to more of your essays. I identified closely with you about those business trips I made with small teams of IT professionals during my career (now retired) - the jet flights, rental cars, nice hotels, nice clothes, etc. I have a natural resistance to too much introspection (just get on with it and do your best), which I know is not what you are talking about, but it is a hole that some of us have stumbled into occasionally. https://liveyosemite.wordpress.com/2024/12/14/fountains-of-love/
That's a really great example of how someone else's sensitivity triggered you. I'm working on the steps you provided, of realizing that my annoyances with people are actually triggers to what I don't like about myself.

Well put.
Thanks for the thoughts.
