Last year, I shared music composed by my partner Sam and received an overwhelming amount of lovely feedback.
You said things like:
âI needed to find another way to just beâŠIâve found it.â
âI canât even put into words how profoundly this affected meâŠI did not want it to end!!!â
âLoved the meditation, the peak moved me with a release of tears đ„čâ
You asked for more. And so we set out to build an entire library of music journeys. I say we, but of course, Sam is the mastermind here. If youâre new here: Sam is a conservatory-trained classical pianist and composer, long-time meditator, and passionate psychonaut (I take the blame/credit for the latter).
Sam has been on the journey inward since an early age, and music has been his guiding force. It helped him overcome great adversity by offering a sanctuary filled with beauty and hope. Heâs since been on a mission to make music that helps people connect with their deepest selves. Which aligns quite well with my mission of helping people journey from the mind to the heart.
Itâs a match made in heaven, and Atoon is our first-born. Itâs our divine little baby.
Why did we make an app?
When Sam began making the music he was destined to makeâafter a somewhat peculiar incident (more on that another time)âwe realized that it didnât belong on Spotify. It wasnât background music. It demanded full presence.
We also realized that deep listening was one of the most overlooked ways to turn inward. Deep listening used to be the way to listen to music, but thanks to dopamine culture, we barely ever listen with full presence anymore.
Of course, we can technically âdeep listenâ to anything on Spotify, but (a) there is no curation of music created for this specific purpose and (b) developing a practice around it is much easier through a dedicated, intentional container.
In a culture thatâs growing ever more distracted and disconnected, this seemed like a huge missed opportunity. Many people struggle with traditional meditation, and while it helps cultivate mindfulness, it can fall short in deepening embodiment. Embodiment is the realm of the heart and soul, where presence and truth are not cognitively understood but experiencedânot in the mind but in the body.
We believe music can help us cultivate both. So over the past year, weâve dreamed up an offering that leverages the power of music and presence for deep inner journeys that not only help transcend the mind but also open the heart for greater awe, beauty, and bliss (and all the other emotions we canât quite name).
In some ways, this is the tool I wish Iâd had when I first ventured into psychedelic journeys and integration. Music can guide us into the places within where words fall shortâsimilar to psychedelicsâand for anyone who has journeyed eyes-closed with meaningful music, itâs undeniable that the music guides just as much as the medicine.
Some have called Atoon a music-induced psychedelic experience but, of course, thatâs subject to interpretation.
For me, itâs simply become a daily ritual that helps me feel alive, connected, and embodiedâand Iâm thrilled to finally share it with you all.
Whatâs inside the app?
đ¶ Music to quiet the mind and open the heart. The music is hard to put into words (which is kind of the point). It blends the classical ethos of Beethoven and Bach, the electronic sounds of modern ambient music, and the trance-inducing rhythms of medicine shamanism into a vast and diverse library.
đ§ââïž Optional meditation and mindfulness cues. Each journey comes with an intention, an optional cue drawing from traditional meditation and mindfulness techniques, which can deepen the listening experience (but is not required).
đŻ Four categories: Meditate, relax, affirm, and feel. Journeys are organized by intention. Most are without vocals but you may find my voice whispering little love notes from the universe into your ear in some of them. Weâre also working on a feature that will allow you to curate toons based on how you feel.
đ§ Playlists for your tailored journeys. Whether you want to build a music-driven morning routine or curate toons for a psychedelic journeyâyou can make playlists with your favorite toons and bake them into your day.
Imagine if Spotify and Calm had a baby⊠and it was born in space. Thatâs Atoon.
